JB's original dream was to perfect his cooking skills, but years of grueling work in the kitchen yielded only an addiction to alcohol and inhalants. JB's final culinary indignity was being fired from an upscale diner for stealing cooking sherry and canned whipped cream. To deal with his anxiety, he moved to Nevada's Black Rock Desert in 1991 and was one of the first attendees of the Burning Man ritual. Clean and sober by 1992, JB was leading drum circles across northern Nevada and was responsible for the "Good and Evil" theme to the 1995 Burning Man event. JB was convinced to switch from hand-drums to a conventional trap set after a chance meeting with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart at the Furthur Festival in 1997. "Every time I play with the Hip Replacements, it's like I'm back in Nevada," says JB. "He's sensual, rhythmic, and primal," adds JB's wife of ten years, Uma.
